BANFF NATIONAL PARK

May 31, 2016  Tuesday
This is an exploring day.  We unhitched the jeep and drove to  the Cave and Basin Sulphur Springs.  This spring inside a cave was discovered by 3 railway workers in the 1800’s.  When they saw the potential to make money, they tried to stake a claim and charge for let people come an bathe in the springs.  However, the Canadian government saw the potential also, and decided to keep it for public use.  So the story goes, this was the beginning of the Canadian National Park System.

A drive around Lake Minnewanka brought us to a lovely spot for a picnic lunch.  The Columbian Ground Squirrels entertained us.  We decided to take a short hike to some mine ruins, but I think we took the wrong trail.  The weather was first warm, then a little misty, but when it started snowing with no sign of letting up anytime soon, we turned back.  We got back to the car, just in time for a good windshield cleaning shower, but then the sun came out again for the rest of our drive.  A herd of Bighorn Sheep posed for us in the roadway.  Next on our list to see are moose and bear.
